Gold or silver: which colour suits you?

Gold or silver. It seems like a small choice, until you are standing in front of your jewelry box.

First, to be clear: our pieces are gold-tone or silver-tone. They are not made of solid gold or silver. What each item is made of is listed under material on the product page. This article is about colour.

At the bottom you will find a quick guide with three questions.

Look at your undertone

Your skin has an undertone: warm, cool or neutral. It gives you a good starting point.

Does your skin have a golden or peachy glow? Gold-tone often looks lovely. Do you see more pink or red? Silver-tone usually works better. With a neutral undertone, you can wear both.

These are guidelines, not rules. How you feel in a piece matters most.

Look in your wardrobe

What you wear every day plays a part too.

Gold-tone works with earth tones, beige, cream, brown and camel. Silver-tone works with black, white, grey, blue and denim. Is your wardrobe mostly neutral? Then both work, each in its own way.

Gold-tone adds warmth. Silver-tone adds contrast.

What mood are you after?

Gold-tone feels warm, soft and classic. Silver-tone feels fresh, clean and modern.

Sometimes the choice is not about what suits you best, but about your mood today. That is fine.

Can you mix gold and silver?

Yes. The old rule that says you cannot is outdated.

A mix looks deliberate when the pieces share something. Choose shapes that look alike, or let one colour lead and use the other as an accent. A gold-tone necklace with a fine silver-tone chain. Silver-tone earrings with a gold-tone ring.

Many of our earrings come in both colours. Useful if you like to switch.

Quick guide

Answer three questions and count your answers.

  1. Your veins. Look at the inside of your wrist in daylight. Do your veins look greenish? Choose gold-tone. Blue or purple? Choose silver-tone. Both? You can go either way.
  2. White or cream. Hold a white and a cream shirt under your face. Does cream suit you better? Choose gold-tone. Does crisp white suit you better? Choose silver-tone.
  3. Your wardrobe. Lots of earth tones and camel: gold-tone. Lots of black, grey and denim: silver-tone.

The same answer two or three times? Then you know where to start. Still unsure? Choose a piece that comes in both colours and wear them in turns.
